UCSF Health Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation and UCSF School of Nursing (SON) are pleased to announce the call for proposals for the 2025-2026 UCSF Clinical Nursing Research (CNR) Grant. This grant program provides support for pilot research projects led by a collaborative investigator team that includes a UCSF SON faculty member and a UCSF Health clinical nurse.

The primary goals of this grant program are to:

  • Foster the research capacity of clinical nurses at UCSF Health to address pressing clinical issues.
  • Enable SON faculty to conduct pilot studies within the health system that generate preliminary data for extramural funding.
  • Strengthen the partnership between SON faculty members and clinical nurses that lead to the creation of new knowledge around the care of patients, families, and communities served by UCSF.
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships between faculty members and clinical nurses to design and implement clinically meaningful research projects that lead to the creation of new knowledge that impacts the healthcare of patients, families, and communities served by UCSF.

Each CNR grant proposal can be funded for up to $30,000 for 12 months.

The proposed research project must be done by a collaborative team that includes a UCSF SON faculty member and a UCSF Health clinical nurse as multiple Principal Investigators (PIs) or Co‐PIs. Proposals by Interdisciplinary research teams are encouraged.

2025-2026 Special Research Focus

The UCSF Department of Nursing has a special interest in research on three operational priorities: Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury (HAPI) and falls among all patients and clinical care settings, and medication errors among pediatric patients.

Patient safety and care quality are reflected in the rates of HAPI and falls experienced during a healthcare encounter or episode of care. Nurses lead the efforts to reduce preventable harm through prevention, early detection, and effective treatment. However, research is needed to improve risk prediction and mitigation, identify the most effective interventions, tailor implementation to diverse settings and populations, and reduce preventable harm and disparities.

Research areas of interest:

  • Novel and adapted interventions to reduce HAPI, falls, and medication errors
  • Intervention adaptations across diverse clinical settings and patient populations
  • Nurses' and patients experience with prevention and intervention strategies

Special consideration will be given to proposals focusing on the use of technology or AI to efficiently develop, deliver, or personalize interventions of interest.

This call encourages pilot and preliminary research that examines a wide range of approaches to optimize the effectiveness of interventions in the health system, including cost analyses. Proposals should focus on the translation of insights generated by research into practice, including scalability, sustainability, and equity. Implementation science, hybrid, and pragmatic trials are encouraged

To ensure proposals meet eligibility requirements and program priorities, applicants are required to submit a Statement of Interest (SOI) as the first step in the application process. Full proposals will be invited for submission after the approval of the SOI.

SOI will be evaluated based on the completeness, co-PI team eligibility, and alignment with CNR program goals. Scholarly merit and research quality will NOT be evaluated at the SOI stage.

SOI is due Monday, December 15, 2025 12 noon PST.
