eTNS Cares Study Interest |
Past studies have shown external trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) to reduce ADHD symptoms in children. Researchers at UCSF want to learn if eTNS also works to treat ADHD symptoms in children (7-14 years old) on the autism spectrum (ASD).
Participation in the eTNS CARES study spans 8-12 weeks and includes:
- 4-5 visits to UCSF Mission Bay for medical assessments and psychological evaluations (1-3 hours)
- 4 brief virtual check-ins (≤1 hour)
- 6 weeks of nightly eTNS treatment (8 hours during sleep)
- Random assignment to either receive the active or the sham/inactive device
Note: Those participants who received the sham device can complete the study again with the active device.
Visit this government page to learn more about the study. Some possible risks include skin irritation, sleep problems, headaches, and discomfort. More information about the eTNS device can be found on the manufacturer's website.
