The UReTER Mentorship Program was created by UCSF Urology residents to promote mentorship of medical students applying into urology from a wide range of backgrounds who may not otherwise consider the field of urology.

Important information regarding our UReTER Program:

This mentorship model focuses more in guiding medical students on their SAU-AUA Match journey.

  • Each interested medical student shall choose to be match with (1) one available resident/fellow on our sign up roster.
  • Mentor information will be available to view on our Urology Site here: Resident/Fellow Mentor Roster | UCSF Department of Urology
  • The matching process is on a first come, first serve basis.
  • You can email Karen Tabayoyong at Karen.Tabayoyong@ucsf.edu with any questions, concerns, and feedback about the program.
  • You must complete this survey prior to selecting a mentor. The mentor sign up link will be shown once you submit this survey.

Projected timeline:

  1. Match emails will be sent to the mentees and mentors starting the 2nd week of April and through-out the AY.
  2. Mentors are required to meet with their mentees at least 2 times a month via zoom, phone, in-person (if applicable).
    • The UReTER program coordinator, Karen.Tabayoyong@ucsf.edu, will also send out emails to remind mentors/mentees to meet during important dates (sub-i season, application season, etc).
  3. Sign-ups will be closed on December 2025 and will reinstate April 2026. (projected).

SAU-AUA Match Policy

In accordance with the SAU-AUA Match Policy, resident/ fellow mentors may not tell applicants how they will be ranked in their respective programs. In addition, SAU prohibits all communication with any member of a program (students/residents/faculty/admins/etc.) after the interview. In order to avoid any match violations, communication between mentors and medical students must stop once a student has their first interview. In order to align with these match rules, we recommend that mentors be proactive with advising earlier on in the application cycle.
