UCSF Department of Urology is proud to announce our March Grand Rounds session on Wednesday, March 25th, 2026, with guest of honor, Dr. Sarah Temkin. We will be showing her film, 1001Cuts, and have the opportunity to discuss the film with Dr. Sarah Temkin and a group of panelist.

1001cuts

The daughters of Title IX discover that pervasive stereotypes and gender-based discrimination persist within the high-stakes professional world of surgery - a workplace designed for and still controlled by men.

About the film

1001cuts explores the careers of women who benefited from the educational opportunities granted by the landmark Title IX legislation, passed in 1972, which banned gender discrimination in higher education. Title IX was part of a social and cultural revolution that allowed women to train as physicians and join the high-stakes professional world of surgery. Since 2003 half of medical students in the United States have been women, yet surgery has not been historically viewed as 'women's work,' and women have been slow to enter surgical fields. Today, though, nearly half of the physicians training in surgical fields are women. Ample evidence suggests that women are just as good (and possibly better) at delivering care. Leadership and culture in surgery remain disproportionately and persistently male. Pervasive stereotypes and gender-based discrimination persist within this workplace designed for, and still controlled by men. Within surgery, the failure to implement culture change has had wide ranging impacts on the careers of women, the healthcare system, and the patient care experience.

Dozens of surgeons who are women were interviewed about their experiences, hopes, dreams and careers. The women featured in the film represent these extraordinarily dedicated physicians who work every day to improve the health and lives of others despite untold challenges.

In the making of this film, stock footage of surgeons who are women was decidedly difficult to obtain. Hundreds of women sent photos and videos of themselves in their work environment in order to fill this gap.
